Kaiya Jacob (she/her)

Born and raised as the youngest of four in so-called Vancouver, I have always been a very curious person. Whether it was curiosity in what my older sisters were getting up to, exploring the back garden of my co-op to see what treasures lay behind the trees, or asking my parents “why” until the sun went down, curiosity has led my way.

As a kid, I was particularly curious about pregnancy. I loved babies, I was fascinated by pregnant family and friends, and I was absolutely in awe of childbirth. This interest has expanded over time and has carried me to the work I do today.

As a lesbian and white passing settler of mixed Swedish, Irish, German, and Afro-Trinidadian descent living on Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh territories, anti-oppression is central to my values and my work.

I’m informed by my experiences as mixed-race person, as a lesbian, and as a person living with chronic illness which have shaped my worldview, helping me to creatively approach social justice problem solving.

I started with this team as a Youth Research Assistant in 2022 and now work as a Research Coordinator for the Ask Us and It’s My Choice projects. I aim to pursue a career in Social Work and Counselling alongside my growing practice as a full spectrum birth worker.

On a perfect day, you will find me sleeping in, knitting in the sun by the ocean or with my feet in the river, and listening to my playlist of the month.
